The other day I had an amazing opportunity to chat with an exert in the world of small businesses. It didn’t start out that way, he’s an old friend of mine, and I just happened to bump into him while I was eating lunch. I thought we were going to talk about sports or something, but we didn’t. He is writing a book on business success, based on several people he’s talked to, and wanted to share the results with me.
One surprise he shared with me was the level of preparation that small business owners did before they launched their business. While some of them had some pretty well thought out plans, most of them didn’t. They just jumped in with both feet and somehow survived. There didn’t seem to be any clear advantage among those that started off with a solid plan in mind.
One thing that I had actually heard about before was that people that didn’t have much business experience when they started tended to do a bit better than those that did. It has something to do with being more open to the experience, and learning as you go on, rather than going in with a bunch of preconceived notions.
One thing that actually seemed to make a bit of sense was that couples were generally much more successful than those who ran a business on their own. And in the couples who ran businesses together, the ones that were the most successful were the ones that ran their business as an equal partnership, rather than as one person being the only boss.
And lastly, he surveyed all these business people and found out how much of them had success right away. Most of them didn’t, and had to struggle for a while before making a profit. This is pretty common in most businesses, big and small. Many large start up companies don’t do well their first few years, and only start making some serious profits after several years or more.
So after I digested these facts, we went our separate ways, and I felt much more enlightened about the American business scene. Success is possible, but you need to put in some time and effort. In the end, you’ll find that it’s well worth it.
