Its purpose is to describe how IT elements should be organized to provide business value, documenting the processes, functions and roles of IT Service Management. This best practice framework has been drawn from public and private sectors internationally.

This perspective emerged in the 1980’s as a set of books, covering distinct topics regarding ITSM. V1 numbered 30 volumes. V2, which appeared in 2000/2001, comprised 8sets mainly on Service Support and Service Delivery, meant to make ITIL more accessible and affordable. Version 3 was published in May 2007. It is based on a lifecycle approach to service management, emphasizing IT business integration, confirming ITIL’s place as the most credible framework for IT Service Management.

A new four level qualification path appeared together with the launch of v3, including Foundation, Intermediate, Expert and Master courses. Each level has a certain number of credits which are needed in order to reach the advanced positions. Qualifications obtained in previous versions also stand as credits.

The target audience for the Foundation Certificate is represented by individuals who require elementary understanding of ITIL principles and professionals working for organizations that have adopted and adapted ITIL.The Intermediate Certificate finds its audience among people interested in a more profound understanding of ITIL Service Lifecycle elements in order to implement them with a view to boost the overall quality of ITSM within an organization.

Expert qualification requires the accumulation of 22 credits: two from the compulsory first step, namely the Foundation module, five from the compulsory final step ‘Managing Across the Lifecycle’ and fifteen either from Capability or Lifecycle modules. The Expert certification is requested in order to apply for the Master level. You also have to demonstrate practical application experience by means of a peer evaluation scheme.

Those who hold v2 or even earlier qualifications can use them as credits towards the Expert level. They may also benefit from current bridging routes which allow them to update their knowledge and certification.
