Pinball Emulation of Classic Tables

Visual Pinball

Pinball tables made its entrance to the public in the local arcades even before the classic video games. Pinball machines have always been a fun way to compete with our skills and reflexes. Today’s tables are quite advanced with digital sound-effects, multiballs and large ramps but the early tables didn’t have flippers or most of the other features as they where not electricity powered. On these old tables, a player would shoot balls up a ramp and on the playfield where holes where the ball would drop in and award you points. Electricity revolutionized Pinball in the 1930′s and even more when they included flippers. The first Pinball with flippers was the Humpty Dumpty table from 1947 by Gotlieb. This created a whole new level of relation between player and table. From here on tables later expanded with features like ramps, multiballs, dot matrix displays and digital sound effects. Still Pinball are not so popular today as the golden era of Pinball.

A positive note is its possible to simulate the large variety of Pinball tables on computer, even the old ones. People recreate famous Pinball machines with Visual Pinball and its easy to find them around the web. You can also try to make your own Pinball machine with Visual Pinball, these are referred to as original tables where as recreations are conversions from real machines. Its user interface makes it easy to customize layouts and include any elements you want on your table, making the table is mostly a simple task. The more difficult part is the programming. It is good help to look at the scripts from other tables and learn from the code.

An example of an original table is Irina Pinball. This table pays tribute to the Russian ice skater, Irina Slutskaya. A large part of music in game are tunes of famous classical music. The main challenge in this table and like most other tables, is to beat the highscore, which can be quite difficult. The table includes the usual Pinball suspects like bumpers, skillshots and multi balls. Have fun.
