Google was founded in 1998 by two students from Stanford University, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. They believed that they could build a search engine around the concept that the relationships between different Websites could offer the user an improved experience over others provided by other search engines on the marketplace at that time. It was based around the number of times the keywords beings searched for were featured on the page. The importance of the page was also taken into account which was evaluated by back links This system was called Backrub.
They added a new element to their search features in 2000 with their Google Adwords sponsored advertising programme. They would set up and manage an advertising programme on behalf of their clients for a monthly fee. They would be able to estimate the cost per click their client would have to pay based each time their targeted keywords were clicked. The page’s clean appearance based around their text-based advertising gives a the page a decent loading speed and was admired by its loyal users.
PageRank plays a key role in where a Web page will appear in Google’s search results. It is based around how many other Web pages are linking to it. This is what sets apart PageRank from other SEO techniques.
Google has certain guidelines which they make available for Webmasters to ensure that their site aligns with thus allowing their site to be found and, indexed and ranked. Although they make available, their set of guidelines, they keep their algorithms used to award PageRank, very much under wraps. This is to prevent abusive use of the system. They do, however, disclose that it is based upon a link analysis algorithm. This makes it different to other SEO techniques as it grades the site on both the quantity and quality of back links it has.
Google has developed into far more than just a search engine. They have not only developed their own services but have also acquired other Web companies such as YouTube and now they offer video sharing, email and much more. They have now also expanded into radio advertising and offline publications to encompass almost all forms of media.
