Information Technology, or IT, refers to a wide variety of areas. In short, it is the study of computer processing, programming and programming languages, hardware, applications, data, mobile communications and the list goes on.

IT has affected our society in countless ways. The latest technologies have not only changed the way we work and learn, but have also changed the way we use a map or pay our bills. These are just a few reasons why it is so important for us to understand IT today.

Since technology has completely changed the way we function in society, we are forced to place professionals in the roles of managing our systems. IT professionals help to solve any problems, glitches, or malfunctions in our technologies. They are also a very knowledgeable group of people. They know all the best products, the easiest and most efficient ways to hook up systems, and run software.

IT started back in the early 90s when the Internet and home computer usage began to rise. By the late 90s into the 2000s, just about every home and business in America had a computer. With the vast growth and dependency on the use of cell phones, computers, and email, technology had nowhere to grow but up.

The Internet really expanded technology into what we know today. The Internet provoked email, file transfers and sharing, and even downloading music. The Internet even became readily available on cell phones and is a regular capability on all cell phones produced today.

Although technology has enhanced our society and our capabilities, unfortunately there are some downfalls. IT professionals and technicians are constantly researching and experimenting with ways to provide better services, faster Internet speed (such as fiber optics), and download time. They are also busy with enhancing connection speed, upgrading and adding more RAM to systems, and adding wireless capabilities.

Imagine how stressful we would all be if we didn’t have IT techs working behind the scenes on troubleshooting our systems. Despite the situation the economy is in, ITs are busier than ever. The technology industry doesn’t seem to be slowing down or stopping any time soon.

It’s probably safe to say that we’ve all thought about what the future holds for our society. What new technological advances are coming down the pike? What will we think of next? Will the new gadget make our lives easier, or more difficult?

It isn’t a surprise to most to hear that Google is the most used and most popular search engine on the Web. We use Google to find something, look something up we don’t know, and even ask questions. Google first rose to the surface in the mid-90s as a search engine. Since then, it has grown to become a multinational corporation, Google Inc.

Google was discovered in 1996 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin who were PhD students at Stanford University in California. Google first started as a research project to try and determine a better way to search the Web and was only available through the Stanford University website. The name “Google” originated from “googol”, which is the large number 10 to the 100th power, or the digit 1 followed by 100 zeros.

After Page and Brin completed their research, Google was released to the public and became a registered search engine in September 1997. A year later in September 1998, Google Inc. was established. Over the next decade, Google Inc. bought out a number of smaller companies, and became partners with others. In 2006, Google bought YouTube for $1.6 billion. This was one of the most memorable moves in Internet history. Google has also partnered with other companies, specifically with NASA to assist in a research program. Other companies included AOL, Microsoft, and Nokia.

A decade later in 2009, Google became the most used and most popular search engine in the United States. It still stands as the most used search engine almost two years later. It is even considered a rite of passage to “Google yourself”. This is when you type your own name into the Google search bar and see what information comes up.

However, Google is more than just a search engine for word type searches. It provides more advanced results related to a keyword than just another site where the keyword appears. For example, Google will pull up stock reports, weather reports, statistics, maps, airports, home and job listings, and even sports data and statistics.

Aside from the search engine functions, Google also provides services such as a currency converter and language translator. Google also offers a free online storage site. You can upload and download documents, view and edit them, share them with other users, and move them from folder to folder.

Google also offers for-profit services next to the free ones. Their most profitable service is Google AdWords. AdWords generated over $23 billion in 2009. This is an advertising service where Google assists business in their marketing and advertising. This is specifically Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising which is a small string of text (a line or two) which is useful for advertisements and banners.

Google has certainly dominated the World Wide Web with its advanced search engine functions and other beneficial services. Google and Google Inc. will most likely continue to grow and prosper in the future. They are continuously one step ahead on the Web, which puts them in first place in competition. So where will the Internet and search engines be in the future? “Google it”.
