What would you do without your cell phone? Most of us don’t know how to respond to that as our lives are completely inundated with cell phones and mobile communications. We have become so reliant on mobile communications.

Mobile communications include any electronic device that is used solely to communicate to another by way of a network and satellite. These are also known as “cell sites” and today, there are many of them. The first mobile phone first rose to the surface in 1973. It was invented by a man named Dr. Martin Cooper who worked for Motorola. His model wasn’t released to the public until 1983.

Cell phones have evolved over the years from the original boxy two-way radio to the tiny hand-held device it is today. Cell phones also have also evolved in their capabilities and support many additional services such as Internet access, text messaging, gaming, Bluetooth and camera functions. Cell phones manufactured and sold in stores come standard with these functions today.

Smartphones come standard today with a number of useful functions and capabilities. Most include Internet access and email, text messaging by use of an instant messaging program, calendar and notifications or alerts, MP3 player and GPS, a camera and even a stop watch and timer. It does it all.

Smartphones also have applications. Applications, or “Apps” are small, fun programs available for download to your Smartphone. Applications include everything from the Weather Channel to sales at your favorite shoe store. They are useful tools to look up information or receive notifications rather than looking up the site on the Web.

The telephony industry and mobile communications go hand in hand. It all started in 1990 when approximately 12.4 million people had subscribed to cellular plans. eBooks have been the newest addition to our technological culture. They have changed the way we read books and even the way they are published. eBook software or readers such as the Nook and the Kindle have also become popular additions to our technological culture.

eBooks are books in electronic and digital formats of a printed book. Most of them are in a PDF format which are downloadable into a eReader. eReaders include, most popularly, the Kindle, the Nook, and the iPad. Most eBooks derive from an already printed edition of a book, but more and more solely digital copies are becoming available online.

Public libraries began providing free eBooks to the public in 1998. In 2003, these eBooks included both fiction and non-fiction works available for free through their websites. Over the next several years, this became more and more popular to do. In 2010, 66% of libraries in the U.S. were offering eBooks.

Since the release of Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes and Noble’s Nook, and Apple’s iPad, which all have eReader functions, eBook sales have skyrocketed and outsold printed hardcover books for the first time ever in 2010. Amazon reported that it sold 140 eBooks for every 100 hardcover books. The American Publishing Association reported that approximately 8.5% of sales in 2010 were eBooks.

eBook sales have increased immensely since the release of the popular eReaders, Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes and Noble’s Nook, and Apple’s iPad. eBooks outsold regular hardback books for the first time ever in 2010. Amazon reported that it sold 140 eBooks for every 100 hardcover books. It was estimated by the American Publishing Association that 8.5% of sales were eBooks in 2010.

As popular and fun as these new devices, they have caused some conflict with publishers and authors. With the spread of eBooks available for download on the Internet, authors and publishers have no control over the proper price per eBook and authors are not receiving royalties for the work they’ve written. There has been much debate on how distributors, such as Amazon, should control the price of their eBooks.

Some will say that publishing is a dying industry. Editors and publishers refer to this as a changing industry. Pearson Education, for example, the largest international publisher offers media components which include education portals, eBooks, and even media cards to accompany textbooks. This in turn helps with the long term cost of educational materials, including printed textbooks. Pearson also has a custom publishing division which offers custom media components to supplement a derivative textbook. This custom group works with K-12 schools and even higher education such as colleges and universities to help with the outrageous cost of textbooks.

eBooks and eReader software has directly affected our society, like any other piece of technology. They have changed the way we read books, the way we purchase books, and even the way we learn. eBooks will most likely continue to evolve, but its very likely publishers will have more control over the price and legality of the distribution.

Laptops are becoming more and more essential for today’s use. They can already be found pretty much everywhere; in offices, schools, and at home even more. All organizations and everyone using a desktop are slowly replacing those machines with laptops. Laptops are becoming more convenient and efficient to use than desktops. Regular desktops are large and heavy and have too many pieces to them, whereas laptops are a one-part machine, small and light for easy mobility.

The first laptop that became available on the market was the IBM 5100 series in September 1975. The IBM 5100 was first listed at between $8,975 – $19,975. The first desktop, also put out by IBM, became available several years later in 1981. The 5100 series was discontinued only three short years later in 1978.

Laptops have been improved and have evolved immensely since the 1970s model. Since they are becoming smaller and more lightweight, they are becoming easier to transport to and from work or school, or on an airplane, public transportation, or down the street to a local Wi-Fi hotspot. More laptops than desktops were sold for the first time ever in the second half of 2008.

Today, pretty much every family needs or has their own laptop. Adults are usually provided with a company laptop from office managers. Laptops help employees work from home and travel much easier and more efficiently. Students need their own laptops for schools since research, reports, and projects all require a computer’s function. College students really can’t attend college without a laptop.

Students need to be able to transport it to and from campus or class, and need it for a number of functions such as performing research, logging onto education portals, using presentation or word processing programs, and updating Facebook, of course. Adults and office managers need laptops for the flexibility of travel and working from home. And for updating Facebook, of course.

Laptops today are available for MAC or PC. PC laptops are generally cheaper, but security systems and firewalls are needed to protect the internal system and files. PC Notebooks are also known for their user-friendly programs and applications are more widely used.

However, with Apple’s explosion of iPods, iPhones, and even the iPod, the MacBook is gaining some ground. Although a little more expensive, MacBooks are seen more than were just ten years ago. MACs are generally used in the graphic arts, audio/visual engineering, and printing and publishing industries since they are known for their graphics abilities and quality.

The future of laptops has already begun to poke the surface with tablet PCs. Apple strikes again with releasing the iPad. The iPad has all the functions of a laptop but on a small tablet using a stylus. However, iPads don’t have the multitasking functions as a laptop does, but give it some time.

What would we do without computer science and engineering today? Some forty years ago, computes were only a luxury. But now with everything running on a computer, it is important for us to be able to understand how computes run and function in order to keep our world turning.

Computer education didn’t reach the surface until 1971. Case Western Reserve University located in Cleveland, Ohio was the first school to offer an accredited advanced degree program in computer science. Since technology was studied researched and perfected, more and more people began to use computers. Therefore, this created an influx of jobs in computer science and engineering. Thus, causing more higher level institutions to offer degree programs in computer science.

What is computer science and engineering anyway? Computer science and engineering encompasses a number of high tech tasks in several different fields. Some of these fields include mechanics, electrical engineering, and even robotics. The more in depth tasks include understanding and studying how and why a computer functions, its properties and components.

Computer science and engineering are also directly related to robotics. Robotics is the study and research of the mechanics, functionality, and technology behind robots. A lot of the parts involved with robotics are also shared by computer science and engineering such as the sharing of digital systems, communications, and motors and sensors.

IT professionals and technicians must be well prepared and knowledgeable when entering today’s world of modern technology. Today there are many different computer types running on different operating systems, programs, applications, components, hardware, software, units, and electrical and digital components. The job of an IT tech is far from easy.

One of the biggest concerns with using computers today is having the best and most effective security systems and settings. Computer engineers and IT technicians spend a lot of their time updating and testing firewalls and antivirus programs. Most have seen what it’s like when a computer crashes or when a motherboard fails and when you lose all your files. It would be absolutely crippling if a company lost its files and all its computers due to a virus that spread to all the computers connected to the network.

Hackers are the ones responsible for installing and uploading viruses to systems and networks. A hacker’s full time job is to “hack” through firewalls and security settings and do some damage. If they successfully break into your computer, they can steal information, such as your identity, damage your programs and files, and even confiscate your email. These are all things we want to avoid but just installing a security system or antivirus program.

There is a lot of knowledge, education, and experience behind computer science and engineering. Any field that involves technology is extremely important to society today. Our society relies on computers and technology so much that we wouldn’t know what to do with ourselves should it ever fail. The Internet has completely changed our lives. Society has completely succumbed and adapted to all its great benefits and perks. It has affected the way we use a map, read the news, and even watch TV. Without giving much thought, it has turned the single-taskers to multi-taskers.

The Internet is a giant web of computer networks communicating with one another all over the world. Believe it or not, the Internet was first discovered back in the 1960s. It was used for government and military purposes only.

You might be asking yourself how the Internet works. The network that computers use to communicate is what is called the Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP). As we all know, the Internet is a vast resource for data and information. It is all about how fast we can receive information, which is probably why the military used it.

We are beginning to see Wi-Fi signs in store-front windows such, on public transportation, and in airports. The more time goes on, we will most likely see them in grocery stores, banks, and movie theaters. Internet cafes are already becoming a thing of the past.

The Internet is all around us. More and more Wi-Fi “hot spots” are popping up in cities and towns. Local coffee shops and restaurants, airports, and libraries all offer free Wi-Fi access to their customers and visitors. As time goes on, we will begin to see them more and more in other locations such as gyms, schools, and hospitals.

As the appearance and popularity of Wi-Fi hot spots and hand-held technologies continue to grow, it has become as easy as a press of a button to access the Internet. Some gadgets out there now don’t even require a button; you can set notifications to alert you whenever a Wi-Fi signal in your area is available. Remember the days of accessing the Internet by using a phone line and sometimes waiting up to ten minutes for a dial-up connection? With high speed cable Internet and fiber optics now readily available, those days are long gone.

With the rise of the Internet and in technology, the two obviously go hand in hand and have made our lives significantly easier. However, the Internet and technology certainly aren’t perfect. There are a number of glitches that still occur from time to time and can be nothing short of maddening. These glitches can be connection/connectivity problems, web pages with errors, or servers that have gone down and need troubleshooting or repair. Since most organizations’ internal systems and email run on servers, when the system goes down, production completely comes to a halt.

Half the time we don’t think twice about “going online”. It takes seconds and it is so readily available we don’t give it a second thought. It’s easy to check your email or work while you are riding public transportation, or look up the status of your flight with your iPhone app, or order take out from your favorite pizza joint. Our world is becoming one big Wi-Fi hot spot when ironically, owning your own computer was a luxury not some twenty years ago.

Technology has impacted and changed many things in our lives, including the way we listen to and obtain music. Remember the days of waiting for your favorite artist or band to put out their new CD? Those days are gone. Why wait when you can get your hands on the newest songs by the newest bands easily and sometimes even for free?

It used to be that you had to wait and wait for your favorite artist or band to release their new album in stores. Some even waited until midnight on the morning of the release date for the store to put out the new album on shelves. Today is a lot different, although you can still go to the store and buy your favorite CD, it’s not the popular method for obtaining music anymore.

Since Apple products like iTunes and the iPod have hit the market, listening to and obtaining music has forever changed. Instead of listening to music on CD “tracks” or a videocassette tape, you can purchase an MP3 file through iTunes or another media player and upload it to your MP3 player, or the most popular, iPod.

The iPod originally launched in October 2001. In the last decade, the iPod has evolved exponentially not only from shape and size, but from being solely an MP3 player to a portable computer. iTunes is the media player that serves as a main hub for purchasing downloading, organizing and playing music. iTunes and iPods both work on Macs and Windows operating systems.

Unfortunately there is a downside to all this great music technology. Before the iPod, there was Napster. Napster was a program that opened the gates to downloading any kind of music for free. Napster was designed by a Northeastern University student back in 1999. Since we were new to the Internet at the time and didn’t know how to handle it, no one thought of the repercussions this could have on society. Many artists and bands complained that Napster illegally distributed copyright material (music, songs, and even film) to users. Napster only ran between 1999 and 2001 until it was shut down by popular vote that it was violating copyright laws.

Technology has also changed the way we listen to the radio. Why listen to a clunky radio when you can streamline Internet radio? Services like Pandora offer free Internet radio to its online users. It is much easier to streamline Internet radio while you are on your computer at work or studying. Pandora and even YouTube offer free accounts where you can login and listen to your favorite songs and artists or watch their videos.

Internet radio and YouTube have also helped underground bands rise to the surface. Bands in the past had to fight and try to sell their music to get radio play time. Today, we don’t rely on listening to the radio to hear new songs or new artists. With YouTube, Internet radio, iTunes, and even Facebook at our fingertips, its easier for artists to become known and heard.

The future of music is already here and it is continuously changing. The days of radio stations using radio frequencies and compact discs are dying out. Less and less of today’s generation listen to radio stations. The constant ads, commercials, and talk shows are boring and annoying. It much more pleasurable to plug in your iPod and listen to the music YOU want to listen to.
